Caring for dentures
Caring for dentures is just as important as caring for any remaining natural teeth.
Poorly cleaned dentures can accumulate plaque, debris and bacteria, causing bad breath and gum disease. Dentures can also stain and break easily if not cared for properly. Over time dentures may need to be re-lined due to general wear and tear.
The mouth can also change in shape as gums recede with age. Always have loose fitting dentures checked as they can cause sore gums, infection and difficulty eating.
Deterioration in health, weight loss and not wearing dentures all the time can often cause loose fitting dentures. Relining dentures is a simple procedure that helps achieve a better fit.
If you need dentures repaired or relined you need to find a Dental Prosthetist at a dental clinic. New dentures should last 7 - 10 years.
Carer tips for cleaning dentures
- Clean dentures at least twice a day
- Use a soft brush
- Do not use normal or whitening toothpaste as too abrasive and can scratch dentures
- Use liquid soap or a denture cleaner
- Brush the roof of the mouth
- Rinse dentures and mouth well
- Store dentures in water when not in mouth (not boiling water as it will warp them)
- Place a face washer in the basin when cleaning or fill with water to prevent breakage if dropped in a sink
- Store in a denture container not a tissue or handkerchief where it can be thrown away
- Soak in denture cleaner overnight to remove stains
- Rinse dentures and mouth again before reinserting
- Use a denture gel to keep dentures in place
- Ask your dental prosthetist about marking the dentures for identification especially prior to residential care
Tip: Place the lower denture in first if placing dentures in an individual's mouth.
