What is malnutrition?
Malnutrition occurs when the body does not obtain adequate nutrients and energy to sustain good health.
This may be due to not eating enough or having a diet that is lacking in key nutrients such as protein, iron, calcium etc. Malnutrition can also occur when there are problems absorbing or digesting food and nutrients.
People who are malnourished can be overweight as well as underweight.
Age related changes coupled with chronic disease and other medical problems can affect the way the body absorbs and utilises nutrients. Often the food older people do consume is not adequate in essential nutrients increasing the likelihood of malnutrition.
Contrary to popular belief, some older people can actually require more energy and nutrients to maintain weight and health.
A number of complex social and psychological factors also influence older people's ability to maintain a good nutritious diet. Changes in health, lifestyle and finances can contribute to problems with shopping, preparing and cooking meals.
Illness and the effect of medication can also decrease appetite and interest in food.
Over time malnutrition can contribute to infection, weight loss, confusion, poor healing and hospitalisation. If you are concerned about a family member's diet and worried they may be malnourished see your doctor.
The nutritional needs of older people can vary greatly and will be unique to their condition. Consult a dietitian for advice on meal planning and adopting healthy eating habits.
If a family member is having problems shopping or preparing meals consider organising home delivered meals or arranging for a domestic service to visit the a family member's home and help with meals.
