Home care aids to help with mobility

Walking frames and aids can help people maintain balance and strength.

People who are unsteady on their feet and at risk of falls will find a walking frame or aid helpful. Anyone recovering from illness or injury may benefit from the temporary use of a walking frame or walking aid.

Electric scooters and motorised wheelchairs are also great devices to promote independence and a change of environment.

Popular mobility aids to consider include:

  •  Walking frames - can be for in or outdoor use, with wheels, baskets, seats and various styles of brakes
  •  Shopping trolleys - great for storage on shopping trips, some come with seats for resting on.
  •  Walking sticks and crutches - provide simple support, can be adjustable, folding with various hand grips.
  •  Wheelchairs - can be motorised or manual, folding or rigid
  •  Electric scooters - for use in or outdoors, scooters can have different powers, ranges and styles

Contact an Independent Living Centre (ILC) in your state on 1300 885886 for more information about mobility equipment, home care aids and suppliers.

You can buy mobility equipment from pharmacies, medical supply stores, rehabilitation shops and online.

Always talk to a physiotherapist or occupational therapist before purchasing walking frames and mobility equipment.

Hi Julie, The best thing to do is contact Independent Living Centres Australia http://www.ilcaustralia.org/home/contactus.asp They don't sell equipment but they will help you find your nearest medical rehabilitation store, assist you in choosing the right kind of equipment and you can talk to an occupational therapist over the phone. They are all over Australia for NSW call 02 9890 0940 or click on the link above. Hope this helps.

I am looking to bring my mother home to live with me and I wanted to enquire as to whether you hire out equipment? I would need a hoist, a mobile commode and bed rails. Can you please contact me with the costs involved?
