Bed handles- Help with transfers in bed

Bed handles help a person transfer and sit up in bed. A bed handle is a stable bar attached to the bed that allows a person to grip the bar and pull themselves up in bed.

People that use a bed handle require good upper body strength as they are not designed to carry a person's full weight. Bed handles can help with maintaining balance and can be useful for turning a person in bed.

Bed handles can be easily fitted to the bed for extra help with transfers and bed mobility.

Always talk to an occupational therapist before purchasing a bed handle. They can help you choose the most appropriate bed handle that best suits your needs.

An Independent Living Centre can help you choose the right assistive device and help you find your nearest supplier. Try calling 1300 885 886.

TIp: People with dementia could find a bed handle restrictive or could fall between the rail and the mattress if the bed handle becomes dislodged.
