When should I look for nursing home care?

Dad has dementia and mum has arthritis and other problems they need someone to pop in and see them once a day to help with showering and medications. At night I usually check in to see them. Mum is getting weaker and having problems walking I'm worried she won't be able to look after dad when his dementia increases. Should I start looking for a nursing home for both of them? I've heard there are long waiting lists. What if one gets worse before the other I don't think they could cope on their own. Any advice would be great.
