Going barefoot may increase the risk of falls in the elderly. A study found that older people who went barefoot, or wore slippers or socks with no shoes when at home were more likely to suffer serious injuries as a result of a fall.

Caregiving increases positive emotions

Caregiving has often been associated with high levels of stress and anxiety. A new study published in Psychology and Aging has found there are some positive aspects of caregiving, mainly when a carer is involved in more physical aspects of caregiving such as personal hygiene.

The aged care industry yesterday delivered an open letter to the Prime Minister demanding more funding for aged care organisations and services. The Aged Care Industry Council (ACIC) felt that it had little choice but to act due to fears the aged care sector will collapse.

A nursing home resident has won the right to refuse food, fluids and medications that would keep her alive.The nursing home was worried it may be assisting the women in her 70s to die, but a court ruling found the aged care home would not be doing anything illegal.

Researchers have discovered that educated people tolerate damage to the brain associated with mild cognitive impairment more than those with low levels of education. Highly educated people were found to have higher brain reserves believed to protect them from dementia progression.
