Tips for purchasing a hearing aid
There are many different types of hearing aids available. Before purchasing a hearing aid you should always see an audiologist and discuss all your options.
Many older people will find it difficult to manage hearing aids especially if they have problems with arthritic hands or dementia. Ask an audiologist to recommend a suitable assisted listening device.
Before purchasing a hearing aid consider the following:
- Hearing aids can range in price
- Is the person entitled to a Hearing Services Voucher?
Technology changes rapidly, an expensive top of the range product may be released every 12 to 18 months
- The most expensive aids are not necessarily the best option
- If hearing is likely to get worse over time you may need to upgrade hearing aids often
- Choose an audiologist who is a member from the Audiologist Society of Australia and one you feel comfortable with
- Choose a provider who sells more than one brand
- Would you prefer a hearing aid that is well hidden?
- Get a detailed written quote for the hearing aid and ensure a money back trial period
- Check your warranty covers parts and repairs. Can you get a spare if needed?
- Where can you get batteries?
- Check what your private health insurance policy covers
- Consider insuring expensive aids
- Check fees for any ongoing adjustments, services and programming
- Remember the shape of your ear and depth of the ear canal may influence your choice of aid
- People with vision problems or arthritis can find the tiny parts of hearing aids difficult to use, ensure a person can change the volume and batteries before purchasing
- Check that the hearing aid can be used with other assistive devices for use with a telephone or TV
