Parkinson's disease and support

Parkinson’s disease like many other progressive illnesses can make a person feel anxious about the future.

Coping and adjusting to major life changes can be made easier by seeking appropriate help early on. Joining a support group and talking to people in similar situations can be beneficial for people with Parkinson’s disease and their carers. Individual counselling can also be beneficial.

Parkinson’s disease can present many daily struggles and challenges. However, people with Parkinson’s disease can lead full meaningful lives and continue to do things they enjoy with support from the people around them.

Caring for someone with Parkinson's disease

Caring for someone with Parkinson’s disease can seem like an overwhelming task at first but it can also be very rewarding. Learning practical skills to help you cope with the daily challenges of Parkinson’s disease and knowing what to expect can be helpful.

As Parkinson’s disease progresses, a person will need more help from family and friends. Over time, symptoms of Parkinson’s disease will become more severe. Carers will take on more practical tasks associated with caregiving such as helping with personal care and meals.

If you are caring for someone with Parkinson’s disease be patient. Understand that as the disease progresses you and the person you care for will have to adapt to new ways of doing things. Carers can benefit from learning all they can about Parkinson’s disease.
