Handy diabetic health aids

A number of handy diabetic products will help you care for a loved one with diabetes at home. Keep diabetes equipment in a known spot at home.

Diabetes health aids and equipment

You can purchase diabetes products at most pharmacies, medical suppliers or online. Ask a diabetes educator to help you find the most suitable diabetic equipment for a family member.

Identification bracelet: In case of a fall or emergency make sure a person is wearing a diabetic alert ID badge (available at most pharmacies).

Blood pressure monitor: Purchase a home automatic blood pressure machine and take your own blood pressure between doctors visits. Ask a diabetes educator to recommend a suitable machine and show you how to take an accurate blood pressure. Always follow the manufacturers instructions.

Sharps disposal unit: Keep several handy for safe disposal of lancets and needles. Keep a smaller unit handy to take out on day trips.

Circulation socks: A number of circulation socks are available that help cushion and protect the feet and aid in unrestricted circulation. Ensure the sock is elastic free and not too tight. Seamless socks are less irritating and less likely to rub and breakdown the skin. Choose moisture absorbent material.

Hypo product: Ensure a diabetic always carries a sugary treat in case of a "hypo". Glucose tablets or jelly beans are good choices.

Heel balm: Reduce the risk of dry and cracked skin by using a special heel balm to keep skin soft and moisturised.

Diabetic foot wear: Special diabetic footwear can help protect the feet against injury.
