Depression symptoms

Symptoms of depression in older people can often be subtle and difficult to detect. For many people the stigma attached to depression may deter them from seeking help.

If you are caring for an older family member always be alert for signs of depression. Depression symptoms are varied. People with depression do not always appear sad. 

People with depression will feel sad and miserable most of the time, finding it difficult to do normal everyday things.

Depression symptoms often appear as physical complaints. An older person with depression may complain of mystery aches and pains, appear worried or be unable to sleep.

If a family member has dementia, stroke or suffers from chronic pain signs of depression and anxiety may be masked. They may be irritable, anxious or more confused than normal.

Signs and symptoms of depression can include:

  • Sadness and fatigue
  • Feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness
  • Loss of appetite and changes in weight
  • Agitation and difficulty concentrating
  • Problems sleeping
  • Lack of interest in usual hobbies and activities
  • Fixated on death and thoughts of suicide
  • Memory problems
  • Slowed movements and reaction time
  • Unable to attend to or reluctant to attend to personal hygiene
  • Increased pain and unexplained aches
  • Feelings of doom
  • Unexplained behaviour changes
     

Always consult your doctor if you or a family member are showing signs of depression.
