Common effects and complications of stroke
Stroke effects can be mild to severe. Some people’s condition improves over time with rehabilitation. Others will suffer more permanent disability from stroke.
Common effects of stroke
The effects of stroke depend on the area of the brain the stroke occurred and how much damage it caused.
Effects of stroke may include:
- Weakness or paralysis in legs and arms
- Bladder and bowel problems including incontinence
- Shoulder pain
- Changes to sense of touch, smell and taste
- Problems with speech and communication
- Difficulty reading and writing
- Lethargy
- Depression
- Difficulty thinking and remembering
- Problems swallowing
Complications of stroke
Complications of stroke can differ depending on whether the stroke occurred in the left or right hemisphere of the brain.
People who have a stroke in the right hemisphere of the brain can have difficulties judging distance and space. A person can also lack insight into their abilities, thinking they can perform more tasks than they are capable of.
People who have had a stroke in the left hemisphere of the brain can have problems with speech and language, performing everyday tasks and remembering things.
A brain stem stroke can be potentially life threatening or cause severe impairment. The brain stem is responsible for controlling our breathing, heartbeat, swallowing and other automatic functions essential to life.
Changes to mood, behaviour and personality are common effects of stroke. Sudden displays of emotion or acting out of character can occur for no reason. Stroke can cause problems with memory and cognition. After a stroke a person may have problems remembering things, concentrating or learning new tasks.
Depression is a common effect of stroke. It can have a major influence on how well a person recovers from stroke and the people around them. If someone you care for is depressed see your doctor.
