How do I know if a nursing home is up to standard?

The Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency is the independent agency that monitors nursing home standards and ensures that appropriate levels of care are met.

All aged care homes must be accredited to receive government subsidies. Accreditation is generally granted for three years after the agency has assessed the aged care home.

Accreditation is a continual process. The home must meet certain standards. The Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency will visit the aged care home and review paper work and make inspections. They may also interview staff, residents and their family.

If a nursing home fails to meet these standards, they will be required to take action to improve standards of care whilst being monitored by the agency. Accreditation can be revoked and government subsidies cancelled if the home fails to comply.
