What are the different types of respite care services ?
Respite care is a great way for carers to recharge and take a valuable break from caregiving. There are many different types of respite care services.
The type of respite care you choose will largely depend on your individual needs and the care services available in your area.
Respite care services can be government funded, private or run by not for profit organisations.
- Adult day care centres can provide regular respite care for people with dementia or the frail elderly who live at home alone. Day care centres offer coordinated programs which may include social activities, medical services, or specialised dementia care.
- Residential respite care provides short term temporary residential care. Residential respite care is often used to give carers a 'break', in emergency situations or as a transition into permanent aged care.
- At home respite care is arranged at home for a few hours a week or overnight. A volunteer or paid companion may come to the home and provide companionship or help with personal care.
Respite care services can be arranged through Home and Community Care (HAAC) programs or privately through a home nursing agency.
To find out what services are available in your local area call the Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre on 1800 052 222.
To arrange residential respite care talk to your local Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) or contact a residential care facility directly.
