Q&A

Can a urinary infection really cause confusion?

My mother has been in hospital being treated for cellulitis after bumping her leg on the bed. She developed confusion after a few days began hallucinating and calling out for her dead mother.  She doesn't recognise me and is trying to get out of bed despite not being able to walk properly due to her bad leg. We were told she is now being treated for a urinary tract infection. Can this be the casue of ther sudden confusion, will she get better? She had some memory loss before she went to hospital.

How can I get my parent to shower without forcing them?

The nursing home where my mother lives don't appear to shower my mother regularly. She has dementia and lately difficult to shower mainly because she keeps standing and trying to walk away and at times clings onto the nurses very tightly. I'm worried about her personal hygiene as the nurses are preferring to give her a  'sponge bath' as opposed to take the time to allay her fears.

How accurate is the mmse?

My father has done a cognitive test with a nurse to test his memory, how accurate are these memory tests? I'm sure if they tested him at different times the results would vary greatly? Whats the score for Alzheimer's?

What is the rate of pay for an elderly homecarer?

Will drugs for Alzheimers give you side effects?

why does my mum suffer from skintears?

I was wondering if bad ALZ behaviour is a 'stage' that will it pass?

My dad has ALZ frequent mood swings, angry at my mum and accuses her of many ridiculous things. He's behaviour has gotten worse lately. He was put on meds by doctor as showing signs of aggression toward mum and I know she was scared when he's mood changes. He's memory is not bad but he doesn't remember he's behaviour or actions. Would the drugs cause these problems? What stage are we at with this disease?

I need help getting father to do normal things

Whats the best way to get someone with dementia to do what you want them to do? I'm having trouble getting my father to do pretty simple things like sit down on a chair or start his meal. I come back and it just sits there, physically he is able to feed himself. He is also starting to be wet as he won't stay at the toilet for very long. Some suggestions would help thanks.
