Social leave

Permanent residents of aged care homes are entitled to 52 nights away on social leave without having to pay for extra fees.

Supported Living

Supported Living Communities offer a friendly community style environment with various levels of support. A Supported Living Community (SLC) give older people access to support and aged care services when they need it in the comfort of their own apartment or home. Residents can choose from a range of services including help with personal care to assistance with household help.

Most Supported Living Communities are close to public transport, shopping centres and medical facilities.

 

Staphylococcus aureus

Staphylococcus aureus, sometimes referred to as "staph", is a normal bacteria and is commonly found in the nose and skin of otherwise healthy people. It can cause minor skin infections such as boils or in some cases lead to serious complications such as blood poisoning and lung infection.

Speech Therapy

Speech therapy is the specialised care of people with swallowing problems, difficulties with speech and communication. People who experience the effects of stroke or Parkinson's disease often need speech therapy.

Sundowning

People living with dementia often experience Sundowning. This behaviour is characterised by increased restlessness, agitation and confusion late in the afternoon. 

Sanction

Aged care homes must comply with legislated standards of care and service. A sanction is imposed by the Department of Health and Ageing if an aged care home fails to meet these standards and responsibilities.
