Aged care home responds to newspaper allegations

A few weeks ago, The Sunday Telegraph published an explosive story about several Sydney aged care homes. The story sent alarm bells through the aged care industry and opened nursing homes to public scrutiny.

As a result of the story one of the aged care homes in question was reviewed. The Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency conducted a three day audit of the home and according to a statement on the Bupa Care website, the nursing home was compliant with 44 out of 44 expected outcomes.

Bupa Care subsequently decided to set the record straight. In response to the stories Bupa Care made a video highlighting the affect these stories can have on nursing staff, residents and their carers. The anger is almost palpable.

Whilst they may get great headlines, newspaper stories such as these can also create hysteria and fear, damaging the morale and confidence of everyone involved.

But does it work? What do you think?

The media are always quick to jump on any story that involves the exploitation and/or abuse of the elderly. More often than not they are a beat up and can cause unnecessary fear and anxiety. You cannot rely on the media to provide any sort of objective appraisal of what is actually happening in aged care facilities. Do they do anything to create postive change? Probably not. Certainly the standard of care in the average aged care facility would suggest that they haven't done a lot to generate much positive change.
