Low care homes

My mum has been assessed has needing low level care. I'd like her to go to the hostel close to us but I'm worried because of her memory loss she may not fit in. The other residents don't appear to be as confused and are quite active. I don't think she needs to be in a dementia specific yet as she was very aware of the 'crazy people in that place' but I feel she does need more help on a day to day basis. Staff were no where to be seen the last time I visited, can I get extra services from outside? How much do I have to be involved in her day to day care?

Hi Julie, The staff situation in low care facilities can vary greatly and not all are suitable for people with dementia even when the hostel offers 'ageing in place'. I'd suggest talking to the manager and finding out what kind of services the hostel provides on a fee basis if you feel your mum needs more assistance. Try finding a place with organised activities and ensure the environment is secure and safe for wandering if that's a problem or may be in the future. You could find yourself being very involved in your mum's care in the way of taking her to medical appointments, physio or allied health appointments. Once again ask the home what services are available. You may like to consider a private nurse but this would be costly. It can be difficult to place a loved one in a home when the person isn't aware of the extent of their own memory loss and they present very well. Try anticipating your needs for the future, making another move later on may be traumatic or you could find with extra services your mum may be able to cope at home for a while longer. Check with ACAT. Hope this helps
