How much can I expect to pay for care in a hostel and assisted living?

I'm interested to hear from anyone who has placed a parent in a retirement village or private assisted living. I'm hoping my parent will be able to stay in the one retirement village and move into a hostel when needed. I've heard the bonds are expensive and it can be difficult to get your money back. Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks
